World Economic Forum, Davos


Eurasia House president, Dr Armen Sarkissian, took part in the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, 28-29 January 2011.  He was Discussion Leader on 28 January on the panel ”Stabilizing Commodity Prices and Supply in a Resource-Constrained World”, focusing on food, mineral, water and energy resources which are facing the prospect of considerable stress, as demand for them continues to rise. The panel was moderated by Robert B. Zoellick, President of the World Bank.  Dr Sarkissian was a panel speaker later that day on ”GAC Organized Crime / Internet Security at the Risk Response Network Lounge”. The panel discussed the threat posed to business by internet crime and how could businesses play a bigger role to mitigate this risk.

“Europe’s Energy Future”, was a panel he moderated the following day, which focused on how Europe can ensure its energy security while maintaining a sustainable and competitive supply. Among the topics explored were the projected energy needs in Europe; the impact of energy efficiency and low-carbon needs; strategic pipelines and other alternatives; and geopolitical and country risks. The panelists were: President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan o fTurkey; President Bronislaw Komorowski of Poland; Statoil ASA Helge Lund; GDF SUEZ CEO Gérard Mestrallet and President Viktor Yanukovych of Ukraine. Another panel he took part as discussion leader was ”Clean Growth: Rhetoric or Reality?  The panel discussed where we are at an inflection point in the move to a cleaner, greener global economy and whether policies are encouraging a paradigm shift to clean growth being implemented and whether businesses are showing leadership in developing transformative solutions to accelerate the change.
